Our brothers and sisters in the East, where DMM is thriving, have identified 7 things that contribute to starting and sustaining movement. The most important piece of this the direct moving of God's Spirit. He is the Wind, and we can not manufacture authentic and lasting movement without His power, wisdom, and inspiration.
At the same time, covered in ancient Mystery, we have a part to play.
We can't manufacture Wind. But God, in His goodness and purpose, allows us to build, fashion, and raise sails, participating with Him in the work of this generation.

Like the first sail, the best way to move forward in prayer is to do it.
Pray! Set an alarm, or a timer... we don't often think about it in practical terms,
but fasting is an amazing way to steal some time ordinarily spent, cooking, eating, and cleaning up.

commitment to (and enjoyment of) time in prayer.

3. Cast Vision to Make Disciples
One of the things we love about the DMM process is the assumptions and questions that drive structure.
What would it take to reach them all?
Assume that God wants you to have a real, relational open door to discipleship for everyone in your city (perhaps targeted by people group). Assume that this generation of believers will reach this generation of souls.
What must we do differently to step into this mission?
Right. There aren't enough buildings, staff, pastors, or pros to get that done.
To accomplish our mission in this generation, everyday disciples will have to mobilize to create movement, which will (at some point) escape our ability to process and manage it. We can help, but our prayer is to create pathways of multiplication, not pathways of control.
What would it take to reach them all?

4. Train Disciples to Live a Missionary Lifestyle
Everywhere that Jesus went, He was looking to teach, looking to heal, looking to bless. In our normal rhythms of life and prayer... we need to see with better eyes. To see as God sees, as we go. This stance of openness and readiness to move is a huge part of the DMM process. To look to speak, to look to pray, to look to bless. To look for the divine appointment that can open doors to new groups and new relationships being started.

Find the person of peace
5. Go Out Among the Lost to Find a Person of Peace
One of the big ideas of DMM is finding the Person of Peace. Not creating the Person of Peace... but finding the one that God has been preparing to encounter a believer who can then step in to help. In the story of Philip and the Ethiopian, our POP was already there. Already reading Isaiah, already filled with questions, already primed to respond, before Philip ever came on the scene.
It will often be the case that God goes before us to set the table. Our job to increase our awareness of when this is happening and do everything we can to support. This is a critical piece of the DMM strategy, both in effectiveness and in tying into the dynamic of multiplication.

6. Start Groups (Discovery Bible Studies)
Don't overthink it. Find willing people and start groups. Then let God engage through His word and a great set of questions. Orient new believers to listen and respond to the Holy Spirit through His word, and then to actively obey through the "I will" process. This accelerates the personal discipleship journey, with spiritual growth that is both rapid and profound.

Ongoing Coaching
7. Ongoing Coaching and Leadership Development
Ongoing support and coaching is a critical piece, especially when generational movement starts happening. It will sometimes happen so fast that formal training at set times won't be able to absorb the speed of acquisition and new groups. In a culture of coaching and development, the problem becomes it's own solution with the previous layer of generational groups equipping and releasing coaches for the next generation of disciples. Be relentless here at the beginning and it will payoff downstream!
